Say goodbye to maskne - how to combat blemished skin caused by wearing a mask

Since April they have been our companions while out shopping, on the train, in the restaurant in the evening, or even at work – masks. To protect ourselves and others, we wear a mask to cover our mouth and nose several times a day. This also has a noticeable effect on our skin. What can we do about the redness and irritation, dry skin or even spots that are now known as ‘maskne’? We asked our experts.

What is maskne?

Maskne (mask acne) is a mechanical form of acne. This type of acne was, of course, known about before the time of the coronavirus pandemic. Wearing a mask has long been a part of everyday life in many professions, such as among doctors or nurses.

How does maskne occur?
  • When wearing a mask, friction occurs, which can lead to microinjuries and irritated skin. This allows bacteria to gather in the small cracks. This can lead to inflammation, spots, and blackheads
  • After a wearing it for just a short time, bacteria, germs or dirt collect in the mask. The moist atmosphere underneath the mask also provides the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to multiply. By wearing the mask, we apply this directly onto our sensitive facial skin
  • Skin that is already prone to dryness can dry out even more, and this can lead to irritation
Tips and maskne essentials:
  1. Give your skin a break. Our Collagen Face Mask calms the skin and provides it with intensive moisture
  2. Use a moisturiser that is right for your skin, e.g. our Comforting Moisturizer or Refining Moisturizer
  3. The Reservatrol Concentrate can reduce redness and irritation and soothe your skin
  4. If possible, choose a mask with the highest possible cotton content. The cotton will allow your skin to breathe
  5. Wash your mask regularly and on a hot cycle. This will kill off all bacteria. You should ideally have several masks so that you can switch them when a mask is in the wash
